Talking All About Inspiration Behind His New Single, Ross Davis Releases Five and Dime

American Folk artist and singer-songwriter revisits an old classic originally written and performed by Nanci Griffith titled ‘love at the five n dime’.

“When Nanci effectively retired from the music business back in 2013 due to health issues, I sort of lost touch with her musical exploits, yet I nevertheless continued to appreciate her music from time to time by playing albums of hers that I had. It wasn’t until I read the unexpected and sad news of her death back in August 2021, that I took quite a renewed interest in her work. The more I listened to her music again (especially to lesser known songs), and the more I read about her life in relation to her music, then the more I came to appreciate her dedication to music in terms of her having been a songwriter and performing musician.”

“Nanci has been one of my main folk music influences, such as in one way or another helping to nurture my interest in the genre by me incorporating acoustic guitar and folksy storytelling lyrics into my own music, such as on the song “Bean Blossom” and the cover song “Hard Times Come Again No More.” Given this, and me gaining a deeper appreciation of Nanci’s dedication to music since her passing, I felt compelled to do a cover of her song “Love at the Five and Dime,” as a tribute to her and her musical legacy, not only for my own consolation, but also to further promote an appreciation of folk music and its varieties such as folk rock and so forth. The cover art that goes with the cover song’s release symbolizes both the original song’s thematic elements and Nanci’s own musicianship. For instance, the image of the blue rose” – Ross Davis
