On “Requiem for Mum,” Joe Galuszka turns personal grief into a striking contemporary classical statement. The Bristol-based British-Polish composer has released the single as part of his forthcoming debut EP, Fractures, with the track serving as one of the project’s most emotionally significant moments. Written in memory of his late mother, the work functions as both tribute and reflection.
A major part of the single’s impact comes from its recording with The Bristol Ensemble, the city’s only professional orchestra. Their involvement gives the composition a rich emotional dimension, drawing together the closeness of chamber music and the broader sweep of orchestral sound. The ensemble, whose credits include work with the BBC, Aardman Animations and film productions, approaches the piece with notable restraint and sensitivity.
Musically, “Requiem for Mum” begins in a fragile and almost suspended state, mirroring the stillness often associated with grief. As the piece progresses, recurring motifs gradually expand its emotional world, moving from sorrow into memory and connection. Importantly, the work does not aim for tidy closure. Instead, it honours the idea that memory remains present and transformative long after loss.
The single’s production team adds another layer of polish to that emotional core. It was mixed by Alex Garden and mastered by Nick Cooke, whose past credits include Ramin Djawadi, Kate Rusby and Hans Zimmer. With visuals directed by Giles Pitman, the release presents a complete artistic statement and offers a strong indication of the emotional and compositional range Galuszka is bringing to Fractures.
