From humble beginnings in Cork, Ireland, Emily Magner Hurley has been making a name for herself as a composer, performer, and advocate for stuttering awareness and mental wellbeing. With her unique vocal range and mastery of multiple musical genres, Emily is using her talent to not only create beautiful music, but also spread a powerful message of hope and support.
Growing up with a passion for both music and helping others, it was only natural for Emily to combine the two in her career. After earning her masters in composition from University College Cork, Emily was trained by renowned soprano Majella Cullagh, honing her vocal skills and developing her own style. But Emily’s impact goes far beyond her music. As an educator, Emily has witnessed firsthand the positive effects that music can have on mental health and wellbeing. And with her previous role as education officer at the Association of Irish Choirs (now Sing Ireland), she has been a driving force in using music to make a difference in people’s lives.
In 2019, Emily joined forces with Stuttering Awareness Mental Wellbeing Ireland (SAMWI) – a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting those who live with a stutter. The team, of which Emily is a key member, has been making waves with their powerful message of hope and support for those dealing with this often-misunderstood speech impediment. With a focus on promoting awareness and acceptance, Emily and the SAMWI team have brought their message to a global scale, with the support of noted stutterer and US President Joe Biden. But Emily’s advocacy doesn’t stop there. With her new album, Orainn (Us), set to release on 16/10/23, Emily is using her musical talents to further spread SAMWI’s message.
This collection of original and traditional Irish folk songs, featuring Emily’s signature blend of acapella, jazz fusion, and classical styles, is described as “spirited, mindful, and meditative.” Each song is carefully crafted to provide a sense of upliftment and inspiration, in line with the messages of hope that SAMWI promotes. Along with her debut album, Airs & Graces, released in 2020, Emily’s music has been met with critical acclaim from local media outlets and fans alike. But more importantly, her music has provided a sense of comfort and solace for listeners during these turbulent times. Emily’s musical journey began with a 1970’s Petrof Baby Grand piano gifted to her by her husband, who has supported and encouraged her every step of the way. This piano, which has hosted renowned pianists John O’Conor and Charles Lynch, has been the birthplace of Emily’s beautiful compositions.

With her unique blend of traditional Irish songs, layered harmonies, and jazz-inspired arrangements, Emily Magner Hurley is not just a talented musician, but a compassionate and dedicated advocate for stuttering awareness and mental wellbeing. Keep an eye out for Orainn (Us) on 16/10/23, and be prepared to be moved by Emily’s powerful and uplifting music.
